Bonjour à tous, j’ai un nouveau book review pour vous : Defy the night de Brigid Kemmerer. C’est une nouvelle série YA fantasy.

♥ Review (FR): 

N’ayant pas lu de Young adult fantasy depuis un moment, j’ai craqué la semaine dernière pour le livre Defy the night. Defy the night est le premier tome d’une nouvelle série YA. Tessa Cade vit dans un royaume rongé par un virus et dirigé par 2 frères. Les médicaments ne sont accessibles qu’aux plus riches. Tessa ne supportant pas cette situation, elle tente d’aider, la nuit, les plus démunis. Mais, un jour, son partenaire est attrapé par les gardes et la vie de Tessa bascule.

En lisant Defy the night, ne vous attendez pas à une histoire YA originale. Ce livre contient tous les codes des YA fantasy : une jeune héroïne, un royaume, 2 frères (1 prince et 1 roi). Il ya même un petit côté « robin des bois ».

Le petit plus de Defy the night vient :

→ des personnages : J’ai beaucoup aimé Tessa et Corrick. Tessa n’est pas « bad ass » mais elle est courageuse et intelligente. Corrick est un personnage sombre mais qui montre peu à peu ses doutes et ses faiblesses. Je l’ai trouvé étonnamment complexe et mature pour un YA.

→ de la romance : elle est douce et mignonne. J’ai hâte de voir comment elle va évoluer. Pour info, il n’y a pas de triangle amoureux dans le premier tome.

→ des jeux de pouvoirs et la complexité des alliances des différentes régions. C’est peut-être un YA fantasy mais ce livre n’est pas niais. Soyez préparé, il y a de la torture et de la violence (pas de façon excessive).

Conclusion : Ayant aime le duo Tessa/Corrick,  je lirais le second tome. J’espère qu’il sera à la hauteur du premier. Si vous avez une envie de YA, je vous conseille ce livre qui est très divertissant.

Not having read any young adult fantasy in a while, I fell for the book Defy the night. Defy the night is the first book of a new YA series. Tessa Cade lives in a kingdom plagued by a virus and ruled by 2 brothers. Medicines are only available to the richest. Tessa can’t stand this situation, so she tries to help, at night, the people in need. But, one day, her partner is caught by the guards and Tessa’s life changes.

When reading Defy the Night, don’t expect an original YA story. This book contains all the codes of YA fantasy: a young and beautiful FMC, a kingdom, 2 brothers (1 prince and 1 king). There is even a little « robin hood » vibe.

The little plus of Defy the night comes from :

→ the characters: I really liked Tessa and Corrick. Tessa is not « bad ass » but she is brave and intelligent. Corrick is a dark character but he gradually shows his doubts and weaknesses. I found him surprisingly complex and mature for a YA.

→ the romance: it’s sweet and cute. I can’t wait to see how it develops. FYI, there is no love triangle in the first volume.

→ the power plays and the complexity of the alliances between the different regions. This may be a YA fantasy but the plot has a lot of violence. Be prepared, there is torture and violence (not excessively so).

Conclusion: Having loved the Tessa/Corrick duo, I would read the second book. I hope it will live up to the first. If you are in the mood for YA, I recommend this book which is very entertaining.
